Forty years ago, I had the privilege of traveling to Boston with a high school class to visit a few historic sites. We took a side trip to Old Sturbridge Village and I remember being impressed. Fast forward to 2014. I found a great reason to make a return trip. The Bucket Town exhibit, which features woodenware and wooden toys of Hingham Massachusetts is an excellent collaborative work. From the fantastic companion book by Derin T. Bray to the room filled with an assortment of toys and woodenware on loan, the exhibit is sure to delight both the young and young at heart. Derin’s book is practically an encyclopedia of woodenware and Hingham craftspeople. Besides the beautiful pictures and detailed descriptions, the appendix of toymakers and sellers is invaluable.
Bring the kids. Who doesn’t love toys?
