How Did Pennsylvania Get Its Name?

Did you know…..

William Penn originally chose the name New Wales for his 40,000 square miles in the New World, but the King dismissed that name. Penn then proposed Sylvania, which means woods. King Charles II prefixed Penn to this in honor of Admiral Penn, William’s father. The King often had praise for the deceased Admiral, who had been a courageous seafaring adventurer. Thus, the land acquired the name Pennsylvania.
