What is a Yaugh?

During the 18th century, roadhouses and inns were not readily available along isolated New Jersey travel routes. The early government assigned designated homes to be “yaugh houses” to accommodate anyone seeking respite while under attack or during difficult weather. A yaugh was not an inn, but a temporary place of refuge.

An example of a yaugh house is the Van Campen Inn on Old Mine Road along the Delaware River in Layton, New Jersey.

Pronounced “yaw”
